Serena getting it in with Dan (Dan getting it in with Serena; it really should be read both ways) was not a good look considering Dan dating her best friend at the time. While intentionally having sex with your best friend’s boyfriend is a no no, I move that if Serena really wanted to hurt Blair she would have went for the jugular instead of giving her a paper cut.
Why do I consider sexing Dan a paper cut? Well, Blair was not really all that into Dan in the first place. It’s not like Serena was stealing the love of Blair’s life or anything. Hell, Blair was not even stuntin’ Dan when she was off getting her man back. But anyway, I see Serena’s act of sleeping with Dan more as a result of Serena putting aside her selfless actions for a friend who just sabotaged her summer job and going after what she wanted instead of letting her friend have it. So Serena decided to be a little selfish instead of falling back and giving everything to Blair; it’s not the worst thing is it?
What do I consider going for the jugular? Taking Sir Chuck Bass off the table. If anyone knew how much Chuck still meant to Blair, it was Serena. Serena blocking a C/B reunion would have surely hurt Blair in the worst way. Now, please don’t misinterpret me as saying I wanted Serena to try to sleep with Chuck or anything (I so see them as brother and sister). That’s not what I’m getting at. Work with me for like two seconds. Now, just imagine…Serena keeping Chuck occupied so Blair could not speak with him. Serena getting access to Chuck’s phone and computer to block Blair’s number and email address respectively. Serena introducing Chuck to some nice, attractive female made of the highest quality of Chuck Bass wifey material. Now, imagine Blair, who is in Rome by default, reading about the fabulous summer of Chuck, his new boo, and Serena. *insert evil laugh*
I guess I say all this because if Serena really wanted to be vindictive, she would have acted to solely hurt Blair and not have acted out of personal gain. But, I don’t believe Serena would have wanted Chuck to be collateral damage. Isn’t she the sweetest?
I love this, and I agree with the idea behind it: Serena may have wanted to “get back at Blair” in some way, but she chose something that would have hurt Blair the least out of all her available options. She knew for a fact and said out loud that Blair was still running from her love for Chuck, so preventing her ex-friend from seeing Dan and telling Dan the truth about Blair’s feelings was actually in Blair’s best interest in some weird, twisted way.
I maintain that Serena was, first of all, acting out of personal gain for the first time all season - like you said. The poor girl probably let herself believe that if she could just remind Dan how “good” they were together, he would fall right back in love with her and forget all about Blair. That being said, she did record their encounter, with the assumed intention of posting it on Gossip Girl, so there must have been some element of hurting or humiliating Blair there there that would have actually lessened Serena’s chances of getting what she wants.
Therefore, I think it goes back to Blair’s little speech in their official-ending-of-friendship scene, when B said “The best time I ever had was when you were gone, six years ago.” Well, what happened six years ago? Serena slept with Blair’s boyfriend on a barstool at the Campbell Apartment and then skipped town. It’s like Serena is giving Blair exactly what she wants, especially since she feels like nobody cares about her or what she’s up to. Dan hates her guts for basically no reason, Blair isn’t interested in being her friend anymore, her dad prefers his new daughter over his old one, and Lily is too busy divorcing and remarrying for the 20th time to notice what’s up with her daughter.
Of course, Serena forgets that Chuck and Nate both still love her, so here’s hoping they instigate the search party next season! <3
