Chuck and Blair’s Epic Love Story: The Complex History of Gossip Girl’s “Chair”

Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester). Blair and Chuck. They are, perhaps, the most beloved romance in all of Gossip Girl history. So is it really all about to come to an end?

As Chuck’s life hangs in the balance — and GG fans across America wait feverishly for January 16 to just get here already — we take a look back over every fate-driven moment Chair’s complex love story.

Season 1

The limo
Where it all began. For two such classy people, gettin’ it on in the backseat is pretty out of character — even if it is the backseat of a limo. But Chuck always brings out Blair’s wild side, which is why they’re so good together.

The necklace
Both Chuck and Blair are too intent on ruling the world to admit how much their hookup means — but Chuck says it the Upper East Side way: with a mad-expensive present and about half an hour of neck-stroking. Blair is still fixated on Nate, and Chuck is still fixated on never loving anyone ever, but it’s clear their feelings are too strong to ignore.

The helipad
Of course, it would never be that easy. Even with Nate out of the picture, Chuck and Blair can’t stop getting in their own way. Instead of whisking Blair off to Europe for a romantic summer together, commitment-phobe Chuck leaves her waiting for him alone at the helipad. Man, we hate when guys stand us up at the helipad.

Season 2

The power struggle
If Chuck thinks Blair will crawl back after his abandonment, lonely and forlorn, he’s dead wrong: Queen B comes roaring back from Europe with an aristocratic boyfriend in tow. Chuck is more besotted than ever, but neither he nor Blair can bring themselves to be the first to admit that they’re in love. The battle to force each other to say those infamous three words, eight letters becomes a game in itself — one they aren’t sure they can leave behind for a chance at a real relationship.

The loss
But, as usually happens, real life intervenes to put their petty games in perspective. When Chuck’s father dies, Blair swoops in to comfort him, admitting what he’d known all along: That she’s in love with him. Unfortunately for her, Chuck is the kind of guy who reacts to strong emotion by flying off to Thailand for an orgy.

The reunion
Finally. Finally. After months of brooding Chuck gets it together, admits that he loves Blair, and wins her back the only way he knows how: With lots of expensive presents from all over Europe.

Season 3

The honeymoon
Chuck and Blair are finally together, and they can express their love with manipulative sex games, team scheming, and lots of lounging around the penthouse in various states of undress...

The betrayal
… until he tries to trade her to his slimy uncle for a hotel. Blair can appreciate a good scheme, but not when she’s the victim.

The Humphrey
Hey, Chuck, here’s a suggestion for how to win Blair back after you’ve tried to trade her for a hotel: Don’t sleep with Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen). The look Blair gives him when she finds out probably hurts worse than the gunshot wound he gets a few days later.

Season 4

The Prince
Ol’ Chuckles has a bit of a quarterlife crisis, reinventing himself as a simple barback named Henry Prince to win the heart of sweet Parisian peasant Eva. But his billions soon beckon, and though he tries to bring Eva with him, ultimately she can’t hack it in his world — especially with Blair determined to take her down.

The feminist awakening
Post-Eva, what’s keeping them apart? Only B’s sudden realization that if things keep going as they are, she’ll always be known primarily as Mrs. Chuck Bass. And queens aren’t known under any name but their own. Blair is determined to blaze her own path — but will Chuck still be waiting for her when she does?

The rejection
Blair tells Chuck that she’s ready to begin their wheeling-and-dealing life together, but in true Basshole form, he effs it all up by intentionally humiliating Dan.

Then Blair dumps him. Again.

The Hora
Blair gets busy planning a new life with Prince Louis of Monaco (Hugo Becker), which prompts some scary downward-spiral moments from Chuck. Still, even the promise of a perfect fairy tale ending isn’t enough to keep Blair away from her dark prince.

After sharing a giddy dance at a random Bar Mitzvah, Chuck and Blair end up doing it in a coat closet. Give it up, kids. If being thrown around in chairs during a religious ceremony gets you in the mood, you might as well admit you’re never going to quit each other.

Season 5

The little crash
Chuck and Blair spend most of the beginning of this season avoiding each other — actually, quite a mature decision, given that Blair’s preggo with another man’s child. But that doesn’t mean they’re not on each other’s minds. In fact, Chuck basically plunges himself into a dangerous motorcycle crash just to get over her. It doesn’t work. So remember that, kids: Crashing your motorcycle never helps.

The masks come off
Blair becomes obsessed with the idea that Chuck’s still pursuing her. From where we’re standing, it looks like the opposite — Blair can’t stop goading him to try to get her back. Things come to a head at Sleep No More, when Blair corners him and shows him her neck, which — he finds irresistible? These two are weird.

When Chuck kisses her, she claims it’s proof he’s still a scoundrel and runs back to Louis, and he claims that was his intent all along. But if you ask us, that kiss was the only honest moment between them this season.

The reunion
Thanks to an amazingly selfless Dan, Chuck and Blair finally admit what everyone knows: they’re still in love and they’re never going to be able to stay away from each other. But their happiness is short-lived, because here comes...

The big crash
Will Chuck survive? Will Blair lose her baby? This could be it for Chair...

Gossip Girl: A few reasons why Chuck and Blair are still the story

Gossip Girl has pretty much arrived at a point where endgames have to be set.

Some of the characters remain up in the air, but I am fairly sure that Chuck and Blair are going to be together by the end of the series.

One thing that makes me certain about this is the continuity:

The show has been airing for almost five years. Chuck and Blair’s famous hook-up happened in episode 7 of season 1. Since that moment, the couple entered people’s hearts and has remained an important cornerstone for a show that is always in flux.

They have been talked and written about throughout the seasons, regardless of the status of their relationship. Even if they are not together now, it does not mean they will never be again in the future.

Another sign that makes me believe this show is going to end with Chuck and Blair is the many instances of foreshadowing we have seen, from the famous million-dollar Harry Winston engagement ring to the many wedding and family mentions.

Those are not just casual lines put there to satisfy fans; Chuck and Blair’s destiny has been decided a long time ago, even before the show runners thought they would get a season 5.

Some of you may say that since Chuck’s proposals went to waste, there is no hope anymore that they would actually get together again for good. However, we all know Blair won’t marry Louis — or at least won’t stay married to him. He is a guest star and he is not exactly what she wants. Blair has proved many times that Chuck is “the one I never want to leave” and “all I’ve ever wanted”.

They are the only two characters that for all this time have not stopped loving each other. As opposed to couples like Dan and Serena or Nate and Serena, Chuck and Blair represent the Gossip Girl relationship with the most longevity. And you cannot easily kill a four-year relationship in the span of a season… Of course feelings can change, but strong feelings like the ones Chuck and Blair feel for each other are forever (or at least they are forever in teen soap operas). They are family, as Blair told Chuck in the past.

Let’s look at what happened in the last episode: Blair was torn and she did not know if it was right to leave her future husband and father of her baby in order to go back to Chuck. Her heart decided for her. Even if the baby is not Chuck’s, he decided to take care of it regardless. He decided paternity did not matter because he loves Blair, and the natural thing to do would be to love Blair’s baby just as much — as much as Lily loved Chuck after Bart died.

Chuck and Blair were in a car wreck, which stopped their reunion this time around. They need to face obstacles before they can be together, just as in any great love story.

For sure their story isn’t going to save Gossip Girl. No couple is going to save that show. But Chuck and Blair have been a part of if for 4 years, and will continue to be to the end. After all, every great show has that couple no one forgets, right?

Best of 2011: TV Couples We Wish Were Real!

2011 was filled with addictive television shows about couples loving and hating each other week after week. We loved these twosomes so much that it had us wondering: why can’t they be real?! Can't Chuck and Blair fight on the streets of the Upper East Side daily? Or how about Aria and Ezra trying to hide their attraction to one another while walking down the hall?!
To keep our Best of 2011 lists going, here are some of Hollywire’s favorite TV couples that we dream were actually real!

Couple: Chuck Bass & Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl)

Played By: Ed Westwick & Leighton Meester

2012: Will Chuck and Blair Finally “Have it All”?

As we prepare to ring in the New Year, we’ve done some reflecting on why 2012 will be a GREAT year for Chuck and Blair (and their fans). The thing is, Chuck and Blair ending up together makes the most narrative sense. Chuck loving Blair is one of his most defining characteristics; Blair loving Chuck is one of her most defining characteristics. One thing the writers have been consistent about is protecting the relationship between Chuck and Blair; their love for each other has stood the test of time. Since falling in love in early Season One, Chuck and Blair have always remained more closely connected to each other than to anyone else. Despite the many contrived obstacles thrown at them to attempt to keep them apart for drama’s sake, their intense love for one another has been a constant through all five seasons of Gossip Girl. Nothing- including gunshot wounds and looming royal weddings of doom- has been able to keep them apart for long.

Since Season One, they have been “magnetic” and “inevitable” and their pull to each other only gets stronger each season, even as they grow and change separately. Together or not, they always find a way to stay connected, whether physically, emotionally, or even as warring “enemies” leading to piano “hate” sex and later – confessions of love. As has been proven time and time again, everyone else is just a waste of time. Truer words were never spoken, Mr. Bass. We think the best example of this would be the fact that Prince Snoozey Louis himself has been wasting our time for, oh, shaping up to be over 20 episodes, despite the fact that Blair has chosen Chuck over him TWICE and now is presumably only marrying him to save Chuck’s life. Just as we sat through Nate 1.0, Eva, Raina, Lord Marcus (AKA Louis 1.0) and Nate 2.0, waiting for the inevitable moment when Chuck and/or Blair would find themselves drawn together, once again. We can’t help but feel (almost) sympathetic to anyone who tries to come between Chuck and Blair. Try as they might, they’ll always come in second (or third or fourth) place.

It also bears mentioning that through five seasons, Chuck has only ever said “I love you” to Blair. And there is also that tiny fact that Blair has cheated on ALL of her boyfriends with Chuck, which says, to us, that nobody can ever truly come between them. Chuck is arguably the only person in Blair’s life who is fully aware of what both her light and dark sides are capable of, and he loves and appreciates both sides. Blair was one of the first people (maybe THE first?) to recognize the light in Chuck (after all, she is the “lightest thing that has ever come into [his] life”) and as Blair confirmed in 5.10, she loves “every part” of him. In fact, Chuck and Blair know each other so well, that it could be said (again, truer words were never spoken, Chuck) that they know each other better than they know themselves. Blair knew Chuck was in love with her in Season Two even though he couldn’t say it himself. She even knew why he couldn’t say it, but fought to bring it out of him anyway. And she eventually succeeded. To this day, Chuck has never stopped telling Blair how much he loves her.

Additionally, there has been an awful lot of foreshadowing pointing to the fact that Chuck and Blair will get their happy ending. Starting in Season One, with Chuck’s impassioned speech at Bart and Lily’s wedding about the “importance of perseverance” and “never giving up in the face of true love” and still continuing in a big way in Season Five with “You’re the one I never want to leave” and “I can’t imagine the day I won’t [love her]”, there have many a hint as to good things to come for Chuck and Blair. We find it particularly interesting that weddings seem to be especially symbolic to Chuck and Blair. We think that it is entirely possible that this season will end with a Chuck/Blair engagement, considering that they would probably be married and planning for their family if it wasn’t for that horrific accident in the fall finale. Damn you, Ivy! Damn you, Tripp! Not to worry though, because another thing we are certain of is the fact that they always “find their way back” to one another. It’s no coincidence that every moment of “closure” between Chuck and Blair has resulted in the reigniting of their feelings. From the Season Four premiere in Paris with Blair saying, “It wouldn’t be my world without you in it” to the finale where they tell one another, “I will always love you,” as well as Chuck’s beautiful apology scene in 5.6, Chuck and Blair never miss an opportunity to let each other (and us) know that they’re IT for each other, and far from being over. Blair even admits that she wanted to have a baby Bass when she says, “A part of me really wanted it to be yours.”

The clincher is this: They deserve it. Chuck and Blair are both long overdue for true happiness and as we’ve said before, the happiest we’ve seen them is when things seem to be going well for them as a couple. After dealing with the loss of both parents, being shot, losing Blair multiple times, and now being in a coma, the writers have to be setting up Chuck for a happy ending. The writers appear to be making Chuck suffer for his “sins” far more than any other character on the show. And though Chuck’s “sins” are extremely convoluted, the writers like to make him pay tenfold. Considering Chuck has had the hardest life of them all, he deserves more happiness and less heartache. And what Chuck truly, deeply wants is to have a family with Blair. Blair, meanwhile, deserves her fairytale, and Chuck seems to be just that for her. It’s not just us who think this: their closest friends and family are also Team Chair. Nate, Serena, Dan, Dorota and Lily have all expressed in various ways their opinion that Chuck and Blair belong together. From Serena’s speech in 5.8 about Chuck’s growth to Dan bringing them to each other in 5.10 and Nate’s comment about them finally getting it together, it seems like those who know them best know they’re meant for each other. Even Louis, in all his crazy cyborg glory seems to understand the inevitability that is Chuck and Blair: ”I knew you couldn’t stay away,” he said to Chuck, with an intense gaze and a voice dripping with one-sided sexual tension. And let us not forget that little Jenny Humphrey also seemed to be quite the Chair shipper back in 4.5 when she told them, “Together, you were invincible.” We agree, little J (as much as it pains us to acknowledge your existence).

From a narrative point of view, Chuck and Blair have been the main love story being told for five seasons now. The writers have had multiple opportunities to split them up and pursue other pairings, yet instead, they always drive the point home that Chuck and Blair will never love anyone the way they love each other. There would be no point in Chuck’s redemption arc/letting Blair go and Blair’s pact with God in order to save Chuck’s life if they weren’t going to eventually end up happy together. It just simply wouldn’t make sense to have both of them suffering in order to preserve the other’s happiness, if they weren’t on the path to realizing that they can truly “have it all” together. Their undying love for each other is canon.

Happy New Year, fellow Chuck and Blair fans (and anyone else compelled to read a blog all about the epic love of Chuck and Blair). Here’s to 2012! May all Princes of Monaco go back to where they came from and may all pacts with God crumble under the power of true love.
