TVLINE | So Georgina takes care of that situation?
The situation will be taken care of. I’m not sure it’s ultimately Georgina who takes care of it.

Gossip Girl Exclusive: Joshua Safran on Major Season Finale Cliffhanger, Evolution of Dair

March 29th, 2012 4:20 PM by Steve Marsi Tags: Exclusives, Spoilers

The Upper East Side will never be the same.

Speaking with TV Fanatic this afternoon, Gossip Girl executive producer Joshua Safran promises that the May 14 season finale culminates in a major cliffhanger that "changes the fabric of the show forever" and that fans will "realize without a doubt" the ensuing narratives it sets up for next fall ... with one possible exception.

"There's one particular character, you might not know what happens to them," he teased.

He wouldn't say who that is, or what the unifying storyline of this spring is, but he did promise me there is one: "All the [storylines] that have continued through the royal wedding are going to land in the same place," he said. "Starting this Monday, you're going to see everything start to come together."

No small feat, considering the number of balls in the air at the moment.

There's Serena, who has been on the back burner for much of this winter, but who is about to begin an intriguing new arc, and who the as-yet-untitled season finale episode "revolves around quite heavily."

With Jack (Desmond Harrington) and Diana (Elizabeth Hurley) set to return, "doors are opened that Chuck was not expecting to be opened," Safran says. "Things happens that change his perspective on who he is."

Several Upper East Siders will be looking to show Ivy the door, meanwhile, while It-Girl-in-waiting Lola (Ella Rae Peck) has no interest in the high society world she was unknowingly born into.

"So much of what we've done over the years has involved outsiders trying to break into this world ... now we have both someone on the inside in Ivy who doesn't really belong, and Lola, who wants nothing to do with it," Safran says, adding cryptically that the Rhodes girls "may or may not be drawn together by a common bond."

There's also the minor matter of Dair.

The fact that this has become the most polarizing topic in Gossip Girl history isn't lost on its show-runner, who again insists there is no "endgame" regarding the couple ... not that he'd tell us if there were.

"People always talk about endgames, but the thing is, if you have have a firm end set in stone, everything you write runs into that wall," Safran says. "It has to be done with a shifting, malleable approach."

Sorry fans. In the short term, expect "the specter of Chuck" to continue looming over the new couple, Safran says, with Dan possibly having "a hard time coming to terms with the stresses that brings."

At the same time, Dan "will continue help Blair rediscover Blair in a very sweet, good way," Safran reminds us, noting that she has finally broken the parameters of her relationships with Chuck and Louis.

Safran says Dair becoming a couple was the plan all season long, too.

"Last spring was the tease," he admits. "We knew Dan and Blair were going to get together at some point this season, as Dan's feelings for her would only grow, and Blair would grow more aware of them."

"Blair gave up her control, her power in becoming a princess. Now that dream is over, for better or worse, and she's finally breaking free and finding out who she is. And from the beginning, Dan was the one basically saying 'I'll be here always, I accept whoever you are.'"

Currently filming the 24th and final episode of the fifth season, with the 18th airing Monday, Safran says fan backlash (or feedback in general) hasn't shaped any storylines because it logistically can't.

Not that he's unaware of the passions he's stirred in recent months.

"Say anything you want about me, it's my job, but please respect each other!" he joked, calling for civility among the respective camps as the show ramps up for its long-awaited spring run.

Wishful thinking, perhaps. But a nice sentiment.

Gossip Girl Season 5 Finale Spoilers: Serena’s “Huge Turning Point”
10 minutes ago by Ashley Graham SPOILER ALERT!!
Related: Spoilers, Serena van der Woodsen, Season 5

Photo Credit: GIOVANNI RUFINO/THE CW © 2011 THE CW Network, LLC
When last we saw our dear Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), she was about to be on the receiving end of one very interesting package – the laptop belonging to Georgina during her recent reign as Gossip Girl! We were left to wonder if GG’s most bitter of adversaries would take the bait in her battle against the online enemy, or avoid it altogether.

New hints from executive producer Josh Safran indicate that the choice might not be so easy… “It’s like the Ring and Frodo. That’s how we looked at that story.”

(Umm, nobody tell Serena vdW that she was just likened to a hobbit, mmkay?)

Josh tells TVLine, “Serena has been feeling a little powerless this season, whether it’s losing Dan to Blair or losing her job that she cared about with David O. Russell, and then the Spectator. She’s going to [try to] gain her power back and be the Serena van der Woodsen she once was. Whether that means transitioning out of being an ‘It Girl’ and being a creator of ‘It Girls,’ or whether that means stealing her spotlight back, you’ll have to watch and see.”

Hmm! We already know that S is set to try to work magic on her maybe-sis Lola in the coming weeks… Might she be prepping for her successor? Or – gulp – setting her up as a rival? WHAT?! Oh, vague teases…

At any rate, those of you who have been bemoaning the lack of S action in Season 5 should prep for some (finally!), because the finale is all about the luminous Serena. Josh says that while the finale involves those never-ending love trappings of Blair (& co.), it revolves around Serena! “It’s a very huge turning point for Serena – probably the biggest one she’s had since Season 1,” he said.

Dun dun dunnnn!

And what about all of that drama between Ivy and the vdWs? Safran said only that Ivy will continue her run as Most Reviled on the UES: “At this point, she feels like she has nothing left to prove because [the vdWs are not] going to accept her anyway, so she she’s just going to look out for herself.”

TVLINE | Dan and Blair go public with their romance in “Salon of the Dead” on April 16. What obstacles do they face beyond that?
The obstacles are always going to be that Dan knows just how big of a presence Chuck has been in Blair’s life. And that’s something Blair works very hard to put Dan at ease about, but I think the harder she works at putting Dan at ease about that the more uneasy he feels. And, obviously, their relationship is hard for everybody around them because Serena was and maybe still is in love with Dan. And Chuck has his issues that he’s dealing with. And whenever Chuck is dealing with issues, Blair often wants to help.

TVLINE | Is Louis no longer a factor?
He is no longer a factor.

TVLINE | So Georgina takes care of that situation?
The situation will be taken care of. I’m not sure it’s ultimately Georgina who takes care of it.

TVLINE | If Ivy loved having a family so much, why is she alienating the Van der Woodsens? What’s her endgame?
She definitely still wants to be a part of the family. But she’s upset because no matter what she has tried to do they don’t except her. So, at this point, she feels like she has nothing left to prove because they’re not going to accept her anyway, so she’s just going to look out for herself.

TVLINE | Is Serena the new Gossip Girl?
I don’t want to say because Monday’s episode is very much about that struggle for Serena. But it’s like the Ring and Frodo. That’s how we looked at that story.

TVLINE | It feels like the storyline is building to you revealing the identity of the real Gossip Girl. Is it?
This storyline is something we did not tread lightly about. We knew if we were going to open this door we had to see it through. And we will be seeing it through.
TVLINE | So we will find out who Gossip Girl is this season?
I’m not going to comment on that. But we are seeing the story through.
TVLINE | What else will Serena be up to in these final episodes?
Serena definitely has been feeling a little powerless this season, whether it’s losing Dan to Blair or losing her job that she cared about with David O. Russell, and then the Spectator. She’s going to [try to] gain her power back and be the Serena van der Woodsen she once was. Whether that means transitioning out of being an “It Girl” and being a creator of “It Girls,” or whether that means stealing her spotlight back you’ll have to watch and see.
TVLINE | Is it fair to say the season finale will revolve around Blair making a choice between Dan and Chuck.
It doesn’t revolve around that. That triangle definitely comes to the end point. But the episode revolves around Serena quite heavily. It’s a very huge turning point for Serena — probably the biggest one she’s had since Season 1.
TVLINE | Does the episode end with a cliffhanger?
Oh, it ends with many cliffhangers. We always try to make our finales really exciting and juicy and fun. But in this one, it’s like a bomb gets detonated and levels everything.
TVLINE | So you’re feeling pretty confident about a sixth season?
Yes.
TVLINE | A report surfaced that The CW may only renew the show for 13 episodes.
I can’t comment on that because I don’t have an answer. That remains to be seen. But we are not closing out this season with a series finale.

Our fellow Gossip Girl fans, get your eyes over here! We've got some juicy deets to spill about our favorite show about Manhattan's elite — and you are NOT going to want to miss what we found out!!

We got the chance to chat with executive producer Joshua Safran about the show and what is coming down the road for all our UES faves. Since we had his undivided attention, we couldn't help but ask some very crucial questions: What's coming up with DAIR? Is Serena really going to be the new Gossip Girl? What IS the connection between Elizabeth Hurley and Chuck's mother? And for heaven's sake, will Kristen Bell EVER make a cameo?!

We got answers to these questions — and so many, many more — so CLICK THE JUMP to read our EXCLUSIVE convo with the man behind it all!

Ok, so … It's the end of the series. You're down to the wire. You have no choice, the network has started the final countdown on the Upper East Side. Which is it gonna be at the end game: DAIR or CHAIR?

It's not the end of the series yet, so I'm not going to answer that one! Nice try, though! (I can admit, however, that Blair's decision will be very clear by the end of this season).

Are there plans to ever have Kristen Bell make an appearance on the show before the series comes to an end? Possibly the last shot of the last episode where she watches Serena and Blair from a distance and snaps a picture with iPhone and the click is the last thing we hear of the UES?

Kristen is the voice of Gossip Girl, but we don't feel she is *actual* Gossip Girl. So no, Kristen won't appear on the show, as much as we love her.

Diana Payne (Liz Hurly) is coming back … is she's Chuck's mother or what?

Her return will definitely answer the question of who Chuck's mother is. I can say that much.

Speaking of mothers, does Dorota ever want to have that baby?!

Dorota will have had the baby by the time Monday's episode airs.

In the preview for your next episode, we saw Dan and Blair finding loooove in an elevator. How much more of that can we expect to see in the coming episodes?

Well, it won't be in an elevator, but these last run of episodes definitely turn up the heat. Especially the finale…

Can Serena really bring herself to be the new Gossip Girl … or has she actually been Gossip Girl all along?!

That is the struggle of Monday's episode for Serena. And as to who has been Gossip Girl all along, well, let's just say that is something we aren't playing around with. They'll be a surprising end to that storyline this season…

Can we expect the royal Grimaldi family to make a reappearance on the show anytime soon? Louis? Beatrice?

There will be no Grimaldis appearing the rest of this season. That isn't to say we won't seem them again in the future — I, for one, love Beatrice — but there are no plans to at this time.

We're assuming that Georgina is gone for a bit, now that she is leaving her GG post to Serena. Will she be back? Wait, we didn't ask that right. What we mean to say is … PLEASE BRING BACK GEORGINA SPARKS!!!!

Oh, she'll be back. And this season, too.

Will we ever get some of the original favorites back on the show: Eric, Jenny or Vanessa?

We'd love to get them back. Stay tuned…

Which team are you on: Team Ivy or Team Charlie?

Who says they're separate teams? Oh wait, did I just give away something…?

Which guest star (Hilary Duff, Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland, Kevin Zegers, Cyrus's horrible artsfartsy son) did you enjoy the most, want to bring back if possible?

We'd love to round up as many of our former guest stars as we can for next year if it's our final season. I, for one, would love to see what Damien's doing now…

Can you confirm or deny that the next season will be GG's final and be a half season in the vein of One Tree Hill?

We can't confirm or deny at this time.

Can you tease one of the biggest developments that is coming in the final episodes of this season?

Who Diana Payne is, and what she's been doing in New York all the time, will be answered. And the answer goes back a very long time… and has even been on Gossip Girl before…

Last question: Where does Blair keep all of her old headbands and will she ever have a fire sale so we can buy one? (This is a serious question)

I will ask Eric Daman (Show Stylist) what he plans to do with them and get back to you.

And with that, we will be stationing ourself in front of the mailbox, waiting for our present from Blair Waldorf! LOL!

- Дэн и Блэр официально выходят в свет в серии "Salon of the Dead" 16 апреля.

Danielle: I’m so far past bored with Blair and Humdrum Humphrey right now. Any Chuck-Blair news to keep me interested?

Will you take one half of that pairing and just accept our Gossip Girl scoop on Chuck Bass? You will? How nice of you! Josh Safran tells us that Chuck’s (Ed Westwick) journey for the rest of the season is all about his family. “With Bart [Bass], since he died in season two, we brought him back as a ghost in flashbacks, so that’s in our wheelhouse,” he says. “With Jack [Bass], it’s fun to have Desmond, especially after last year when he and Chuck banded together and made their relationship as right as they could. It’s fun to have him back this year on Chuck’s side. And Chuck’s storyline very much is about family so that’s why you will be seeing more of Jack.”

Gossip Girl Spoilers: A "Major" Serena-Blair Bomb and What's Next for Chuck, Dan and Blair!
What’s ahead for Dan and Blair? Will they be happy for a while?
For us it’s been about, we knew we were going to tell the story that Blair has always wanted to be a princess, way back in season one, ever since she was a child, she’s wanted to be a princess. So now that that lifelong dream is gone, she’s able to step back and go, “Wow, that dream is over so what’s my next dream, who am I going to be next?” It’s really allowing her to come into her own and grow in a great way, with Dan by her side, is someone who has always accepted that growth in her. Her relationship with Chuck has always been fraught with a little bit of antagonism, it’s been sexy and also they tried to be there for each other but then things get in the way. And here she finally has a guy who is like, you go off and do what you need to do and I’ll be here. It’s fun to see when she comes back into her own. We have a storyline that’s coming up, that’s one of my favorite storylines ever in all five seasons for Blair. And I think the fans are really going to love. It’s pure vintage Blair.

Do you know the endgame for Blair and the others romantically?
Right now we’re only looking at endgame for this season because that’s how we are approaching it. I don’t want to say there is an answer because right now there isn’t actually a question. Blair is with Dan and that’s what it is. But it’s more about what happens when, Dan and Blair’s relationship is going to be challenged because the specter of Chuck is always going to be hanging over it, whether or not he’s even involved in it or not. Because Blair is always going to be aware that Dan knows how much she loved a man before him. And Dan is always going to be aware, even more so, of how tied up they were with each other and how they constantly return to each other at some point, invariably every year. That pressure might seep in and cause some trouble but whether that trouble is insurmountable people will have to wait and see.
