People, you don't get it! Chair is history!
Perspective, perspective, perspective!
Across the Internet people are going absolutely insane for Dan and Blair. With one exception: sites dedicated exclusively to Gossip Girl. They remain adamantly Chucklehead sites. But in terms of total viewership, they are a drop in the bucket. Less than 1%? Less than .1%?
Yes, they are fanatic, but they are also minute. Total membership of ALL the Gossip Girl sites is probably less than 5,000.
Now, on general TV sites that have Gossip girl boards in addition to other shows, people are absolutely ape shit crazy for Dan and Blair. All feature people loathing a possible reunion of Chuck and Blair. And enthusiasm for Dan and Blair is driving a resurgence of interest in the show (and the next episode will be the first where a consciousness of Dan and Blair will drive ratings - prior to that casual viewers, who make up the vast majority of those who tune in, weren't all that aware of what was going in - my two best friends who watch the show were barely conscious that something was about to happen between Dan and Blair until the end of the Philadelphia Story episode).
I mean, look at TWoP, just this thread. On Feb. 28 the board was on page 432. Today we are on 584. By next week we'll be over 600 pages. In other words, over ONE QUARTER of all posts on this thread, which has been running for well over three and a half seasons, has been posted since THE LAST EPISODE!!!!!
If I were a Chair fan, despite all the noise they are making, I would be scared to death. Because Chair is making a racket only among a small segment, while ALL the growing interest in the show is elsewhere.
And if you go back to the board here to last November, you'll see that almost no one was all that enthusiastic about an ongoing Dan and Blair arc. But now it is all people talk about.
The Powers that Be on GG are aware of this. They have to be conscious to handle the GG sites with care, but they know where their toast is buttered.
Now, I know the standard Chair shipper response: the ratings have gone down since Chuck and Blair have been broken up. But that overlooks two huge, important things. First, ratings were dropping throughout Season Three, during which Chuck and Blair were together nearly the whole year. Second, Dan and Blair have been the second or third or fourth tier story in most of the post-holiday stories. The "A" arc has been Bass Industries, which people have complained about without mercy. The "B" arc has been Serena and Benwa Balls (sorry, just saw the recent ARCHER episode - if you saw it you know what I'm talking about). So despite being a tertiary story, they have dominated almost all discussion.
Again, if I were a Chair shipper, I'd be quaking in my Payless Boots.
Now, it does look like they will be back burnered for a while, but I had already expected that. We may get a gesture in the finale (the title "Wrong Kiss Goodnight" really makes it sound like there could be some linkage to The Kiss). Clearly they made a huge investment in that kiss and they have yet to cash in on it, and clearly they don't intend to in the next two episodes. When will they? The Finale? Next year. I don't know. But they WILL cash it in. You simply don't - never, ever - make that big of investment and then fail to get your money's worth.
If they don't cash in on The Kiss this season, it is because they are clearly planning on cashing in in some other, larger way later.
