Rhett Butler vs. Chuck Bass
I wasn’t sure which blog to post this on so I just chose this one since there is an obvious GWTW theme.
My two cents or whatever it is worth:
Since the early days of season one, there has been a comparison between Chuck and Blair/Rhett and Scarlett. In fact, this comparison is what made me fall in love with them. I know some people dislike when classics are compared to teenage shows (I totally get it), but I think the comparison is valid. Because of recent developments on the show, the comparisons between Chuck Bass and Rhett Butler have skyrocketed. The anti-Chuck faction has cried foul. He is no Rhett. In my personal opinion I think he is pretty damn close.
One argument I’ve heard against this is that Rhett has always been there for Scarlett and has never hurt her. First of all, whether we are talking book universe of movie, that is simply not true. The two times Scarlett needed Rhett the most he peaced out. I’m referring to when he joins the army and leaves Scarlett to fend for herself with a newborn baby and an invading army and when he leaves after Melanie died.
The list goes on:
After her miscarriage he does not attempt to comfort her (I understand his motivation for not doing this. It’s just that he simply wasn’t there for her regardless of the reason).
He doesn’t show up in the morning after the “staircase sex”. (book not movie)
He doesn’t support her when she tells him she is pregnant after staircase sex (Again I understand his motivation for saying those things to her, but if you are arguing he has always been there for her, this is another example of him not being there for her).
He runs off constantly. She doesn’t even know where he is sometimes. This doesn’t seem like the behavior of someone who “is always there” for Scarlett.
Don’t get me wrong. There are PLENTY of examples of Rhett being there for Scarlett, but perfect gentleman he is not.
I think Chuck is more like book Rhett than he is movie Rhett. Rhett is clearly more sympathetic in the movie. It is written that way (thank you Vivien for rising above this obvious bias bows down). Book Rhett is much darker and twisted. I love Rhett as a character and Scarlett and Rhett as a couple. But is Rhett a perfect romantic hero? No. Has he always treated Scarlett well? No. My verdict is: Yes, you can compare Chuck Bass to Rhett Butler. It’s there. You may not agree, but it is a valid argument. I’m not even going into the whole abuse thing. I’ve had a friend in an abusive relationship. I know what it’s like. I don’t want to open that can of worms right now. I’m also not telling you to like Chuck or change your opinion of him. I’m merely arguing that the comparison makes sense and that it is not just Chair fans trying to make him “epic”.
There are even more similarities:
1.Daddy issues. This is not in the movie, but is expressed in the novel. Rhett has obvious issues with his dad.
2.Boozing and womanizing (I don’t think I need to explain this one lol)
3.A great sense of fashion!
4.Business men (often shady business deals are included).
5.That obsessive love for one feisty, stubborn girl!
The list goes on. If you would like a serious in depth analysis of the characters and why I think they are similar I’m totally willing to write it! I’ll just leave it at that for now.
Please understand that I am not trying to offend, not trying to tell you who to like, and I am not trying to demean anyone’s opinion. If you would like me to give you specific examples from the book, I definitely will.
You can also feel free to disagree. C’est la vie.
