ED WESTWICK ON THE FUTURE & END OF GOSSIP GIRL

On Thursday, I sat down with Ed Westwick following his participation in The CW's Bad-Ass Boy TCA panel, meaning I've officially interviewed every single actor from Gossip Girl. And while they've all been lovely, I can officially say that out of the entire cast, Ed is the most unlike his character.
Don't get me wrong, he's as charismatic as Chuck Bass but there is a lightness to Ed's playful nature that stands in such stark contrast to his character that I was momentarily thrown as he laughed more in one minute than Chuck has in five seasons. But I guess that's why they call it acting!
During our chat, I found his ability to dole out an unexpected metaphor as delightfully jarring as his penchant for giggling and his openness about the pros and cons of fame utterly refreshing. Check out our chat below to find out what's coming up on Gossip Girl and how Dan is like Mitt Romney.

Insider.com: You just wrapped up a Bad-Ass Boys of The CW panel -- do you still see Chuck like that?
Ed Westwick: It's kind of one-dimensional. Also, what are they implying? Is The CW saying I'm bad? The character is bad? Both? [laughs] I can't box Chuck as a bad boy any more – he was very much in the beginning because he was a brat and got up to some shocking activities, with date rape and all sorts of precarious activities. But I don't believe that any more. At the moment, he's a man on a mission to get the love of his life. Granted, there will be a few covert operations along the way, which are bound to have deviousness involved. So there's that, but I think after five years, we've showed depth. Or at least I hope I have [laughs].

Insider: Tonight's episode features Chuck in a coma -- is that the ideal situation for an actor?
Ed: I think I fell asleep, which was perfect with our long days. I loved that scene in the back of the limo with Leighton [Meester, who plays Blair]. It was so Diana & Dodi -- which is why I worried for a second I worried they might kill me. But, no [laughs]. I wake up, I survive, I'm back.

Insider: Fans are as invested in Chuck and Blair today as they were in season one. Does their longevity as a couple surprise you?
Ed: It does, but you've seen it before on countless shows. Fans like to go down that road with a couple. Love and relationships are such an important part of our lives, it's nice to see one played out in fiction. I think it's great and I hope we can keep giving them something that they want.

Insider: This year, Louis was brought into the action, but for fans, the true love triangle has been between Chuck, Blair and Dan. Did you see that coming?
Ed: It's been a little out of left field. Penn Badgley's cute, so I get it [laughs]. It's an interesting dynamic because that's a complete 180 from what she likes about Chuck. The whole situation is infuriating for Chuck because he just wants to shake her and say "What are you thinking?!?!" But he can't. It's not his style. He's got to be cool, calm and meticulous about his approach. I don't know which way it’s going to go – and that's the thing. We've got one more year on our contracts, which will see the show out, and I'm as invested in the relationship as well. I want to know how it ends.

Insider: The idea of soulmates has been thrown around a lot with Chuck and Blair. Is that how you see them?
Ed: Yes, that's what I feel. But I think Chuck needs to get out of the house because I would not behave in this way whatsoever [laughs]. I would tell him, "There are other people, sort yourself out – you have a lot going for yourself. You're a good-looking guy with a lot of money, there are other women out there." I mean, Blair is hard work. But .. she's really good in the sack! [laughs]

Insider: What has been your favorite part of playing this character?
Ed: The whole thing has been a dream role. A dream to have the success we've had. Clothes that I wouldn't normally be exposed to – fashion wasn't in my mind in the beginning. I've loved the development of his journey – I've played every emotion out there and that's great as an actor. And as a young actor, it's even greater because I've been able to add so much to my repertoire.

Insider: Has there been anything you haven't loved about playing this character?
Ed: For lack of a better word, the fame at such a young age has been a weird thing. Very weird. Look, I wouldn't change it for a thing. I've had a blast, as I'm sure you know [laughs]. But it is a weird thing at times. It's offered me an insight into humanity. The culture we live in, in this day and age. Because you see someone on TV, they're no longer a person – they're just an object you want a piece of. It's very interesting. I'm not sour or bitter about it, but I find it intriguing.

Insider: What about the dog? Is it true that you should never work with children or animals?
Ed: Oh god ... on that note [laughs]. It's a lovely dog, it's just a hassle. Honestly, I would have preferred the monkey. That's what it was supposed to be in the book. Maybe they didn't want to pay for the exotic animal license.

Insider: Right, or maybe the writers figured there's nowhere for Dan to buy a monkey on the UWS!
Ed: Right! "Where did he get that monkey?!?" There's Jenny, she changed!

Insider: Looking ahead, you have Blair's wedding and the show's 100th episode. What are you excited for fans to see that's coming up?
Ed: First of all, 100 episodes is such an achievement -- I almost can't believe we got here. I'm excited for fans to see the wedding – it's huge and amazing. You've never seen a more gorgeous bride than Blair. She's stunning. There's a lot going on in terms of this whole Blair & Dan thing – this is where I feel Chuck is losing the battle. There's a few approaches and he keeps shooting blanks. I don't know if he's going to make a late surge. It's kind of like the Republican nomination – I think Dan is Mitt Romney. Chuck is Santorum -- which is better than being Rick Perry.

Gossip Girl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

ED WESTWICK ON BEING DIFFERENT FROM CHUCK BASS: "I WOULDN'T CHASE A GIRL FOR THAT LONG"

We caught up with Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick last week during the TCAs in LA. He divulged a bit about the show's return to the CW with new episodes this year — and things kick off tonight when viewers find out what happened following his character Chuck Bass's car crash at the end of 2011. Ed also talked about life shooting in NYC, his style, and the band he loves most right now. He's got high hopes for his J. Edgar costar Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscars chances, and is looking forward to making a Romeo and Juliet remake with Haillee Steinfeld later this Winter. There was a lot to catch up on with Ed — check out what he told us!

[WARNING: The following story contains major spoilers from the midseason premiere of Gossip Girl, "The End of the Affair." Read at your own risk.]

Monday's episode of Gossip Girl was fittingly titled "The End of the Affair" — so if you're familiar with the Graham Greene novel or the Julianne Moore-Ralph Fiennes film adaptation, you might have guessed what was going to happen to Chuck and Blair post-car accident.

Faced with the possibility of losing Chuck, Blair made a deal with God: Save Chuck and she'll stay away. Immediately after, she's told he's emerged from his coma. "When we start a season, we talk about what works have inspired us as writers. This year, there was The Talented Mr. Ripley and The End of the Affair," Gossip Girl executive producer Josh Safran told TVGuide.com. "We knew were going to tell this story."

Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester: I want the Blair and Dan relationship to play out

Now, it's doubtful Blair will meet her maker (a la Affair), but Monday's episode has left us with several burning questions as to what's to befall our hapless Upper East Siders. Safran, as always, did his best to answer tease:

OK, Blair's found God — now what? "It's a surprising revelation, but it makes sense that she has faith," Safran says of Blair's, ahem, Hail Mary play for Chuck's life. He noted that of all the characters on Gossip Girl, she's the one who has been exposed to religion, via her mother's marriage to Cyrus if nothing else. And God won't just be making a cameo, either. "When her faith is tested, it takes her to a new place. She's gone through this terrible thing, losing this child, feeling in that moment she had to make a deal with God ... We felt this was a new place to go to for her, one that will take her somewhere we've never been with the character."

Reasoning aside, Blair's made her choice. Does that mean Chuck is doomed to fall back into his playboy ways? "All the growth he's made is definitely going to be tested," Safran says. "Will he slide back? He'll be struggling."

Michelle Trachtenberg returning to Gossip Girl

We've seen jealousy bring out a dark side to Louis. Should we expect it back anytime soon? If the royal wedding doesn't happen, it won't be because Louis has another freak-out session. The paranoid prince is gone. "He and Blair maybe lost their way, but he feels like they have it back," Safran says. "He's going into the wedding believing that. He's definitely not the jealous, suspicious Louis he was."

Who's out to get Nate? Here's one suspect you can rule out: Nate's former boss and lover Diana Payne. Safran says that while Elizabeth Hurley will be back in this second half of the season, "Diana played no part in causing the accident meant for Nate." So who could be after The Spectator's new editor-in-chief, and why? "Nate's got enemies, but he doesn't quite know who they are yet," Safran says. "The answer hits closer to home than Nate would like."

Gossip Girl has seemingly aligned herself with Nate — are we going to see her? Well ... Safran doesn't say no. "I can't answer if we'll ever see her, but she's a big part of the story now," he says. "Diana wanted to take her down, and now Serena is after her."

Gossip Girl Josh Safran: Blair has chosen her guy

Speaking of ... Serena's back to making googly eyes at Dan — is there hope for them to rekindle that relationship, even while he's pining for Blair? Safran says the series' 100th episode (revolving around Blair's wedding day and airing on Monday, Jan. 30) contains some answers. "Just as the writers looked back at what's happened over the last 99 episodes, we thought, maybe so should our characters. Serena will be going back and revisiting her history, and you know, you see things a little more clearly with hindsight being 20/20," Safran says. "Their story is about to return, but maybe in a new way because while Serena is looking back, Dan might be looking forward."

Dan mentioned that he's already following up Inside with a second book. Are we going to hear anymore about it? You better believe it. "His second book is going to be very integral to the second half of the season," Safran says. "If his first book ruffled a few feathers, this one will ruffle a lot more."

You mentioned The Talented Mr. Ripley is part of the framework for the season. Should we then assume we haven't seen the last of Ivy, who we last saw high-tailing it out of the hospital believing she had caused the car wreck? Ivy will be back — especially now that Lily and Rufus have unknowingly stumbled upon the real Charlie Rhodes. "That was the introduction of the real Charlie — and it's not the last you'll see of her," Safran says. "She's going to be surprised to find herself pulled into the drama."

What do you think will happen on Blair's big wedding day? Who should Dan be with? Leave your theories in the comments below and let's discuss!

[Warning: If you have not watched Monday's episode, please do not read further. Major spoilers ahead.]

Back from holiday break, Gossip Girl kept things in high gear for the Upper East Siders in its winter return. Not only was the aftermath of Blair and Chuck's explosive car crash finally revealed, but the fate of Blair's baby (gone), her impending wedding to Louis (still on), Chuck's death (and subsequent resurrection) and the identity of the accident's true target, Nate, all came to a boil -- the latter prompting a potential team-up with Gossip Girl of past.
PHOTOS: The CW's Fall Premiere Party
The episode, "The End of the Affair?," also introduced the real Charlotte Rhodes into the picture, something Gossip Girl executive producer Josh Safran teased to The Hollywood Reporter in October would happen eventually, saw Dan working on a second book and thrust Serena as New York City's new Gossip Girl. Also, Dan and Serena -- and heck, Dan and Blair -- found themselves in familiar territory.
Safran gave THR the lowdown on what Blair, Serena, Chuck, Nate, Dan and the rest of the gang should expect in the coming weeks after Monday's tide-turning episode.
The Hollywood Reporter: Blair seems to be entering into a new phase, especially with her spirituality. How long will that last?
Josh Safran: Blair very much believes that this pact she has made with the powers responsible for saving Chuck, she will move forward with that belief undeterred. When we started the season, we talked very much about works that were meaningful to us and inspired us and some of the works that came out of that conservation were The Talented Mr. Ripley and The End of the Affair. We knew from the very beginning we were going to tell a story much like the Charlie/Ivy story has been inspired by The Talented Mr. Ripley. Blair's always had faith, in all different ways, whether it's faith that someday my prince will come or faith that she went to confession in season 1. The sacrifice she's making is for the greater good of the man that she loves.
PHOTOS: The CW's New Fall TV Shows
THR: But it's more significant than in previous episodes or seasons ...

Safran: Belief is a very powerful thing. When people have it, it's very strong and very deep. This is definitely that for Blair.
THR: The episode revealed that Nate was possibly the target in the car accident that hospitalized Blair and Chuck. How will that resolve itself?
Safran
: That will actually play out in the next episode actually, believe it or not. Nate will discover just why he was a target. It definitely is a culmination of a major story for Nate and sends him off in a new direction.
THR: The real Charlotte Rhodes (aka Charlie) is revealed at the end of the episode. How will her presence affect the Charlie imposter Ivy and everyone connected?
Safran
: The real Charlotte Rhodes is unaware, obviously, of Lily and Rufus. The three of them don't understand what's happening, but the real Charlotte Rhodes will continue to be on the outskirts of this world, sort of unknowingly, for the foreseeable future.
PHOTOS: 17 New Shows Premiering in 2012
THR: Dan and Blair pulled one over their friends, who thought there might have been something going on. Any meat to that in coming episodes?
Safran
: The first half of the season was a romantic triangle between Chuck, Blair and Louis. That triangle definitely becomes a square: Dan firmly plants himself on the battlefield. [In regards to Dan writing the wedding vows, it] doesn't mean Blair finds that out.
THR: Dan is working on a second book. Anything to be gleaned from that?
Safran
: The second book is a primary part of the second part of the season. The book that Dan is going to write next is harder for him to discover than the last one. Someone intervenes in an unlikely fashion.
THR: There was a period of time that passed after the accident. Will Blair still deal with the loss of her baby throughout the season?
Safran
: We were conscious of course to give a time jump in the episode. Obviously Blair very much mourns in that episode and she will continue to mourn, but we wanted to get a little bit of distance from the actual event. What Blair is going through is very, very painful and to watch that is also very, very painful. She's also trying to come to grips with it. She might let loose a little more than she normally would at her bachelorette party -- and someone might take advantage.
THR: Serena and Dan embark on their pretend relationship. What's their future?
Safran
: That fake relationship may come to mean more, not be fake, to at least one of them. If not, both.
THR: Gossip Girl isn't heard from until the very end. What does this mean for Serena, who was unofficially anointed the replacement, and the Spectator?
Safran
: With the absence of Gossip Girl, Diana (Elizabeth Hurley) got what she wanted. She got rid of Gossip Girl. In her absence, Serena is becoming a new version of Gossip Girl. Now that Gossip Girl is trying to come back, the question is: Is there room for two in the Upper East Side world?
THR: What's next for the gang?
Safran
: Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) is coming up in future episodes. She begins in the 100th but she's around for a while. Having Georgina is always fun; this time, you have her husband and her son, so it's Georgina in her Machiavellian ways pushing a stroller -- or rather having her husband push the stroller. It kicks everything up into a higher gear. There's a Valentine's Day episode coming with a unique, fun party. There's also an event in the episode following that that's comic but also emotional for our characters. And then after that, we have probably our most monumental, life-changing event in the second half of the season. Not only does the event in the 100th episode change everything, but they're changed forever again in episode 17.
Gossip Girl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
