| Why I Support The Dair Fandom
There are many people who are trying to portray Dair fans as being immature and childish pseudo-feminists who just want Blair to be happy. It’s an old catty insult. It’s also an extremely stupid way for people to white-wash their own behavior and make the other person look bad.
I’ve been in this fandom for a while and I’ve watched the dynamics of the various ship fandoms. However, it has always been the case that the Chair fans were the most rabid of the lot. When the show was boring in Season 3, they mounted a campaign to get the writing back to what it was in Season 1. When the show began faltering in Season 3, they decided to Save Chuck and Blair. All the while, they created websites and burn books where they attacked anyone that was willing to stand up for some other ship that would make Blair happy.
However, Chair fans have not only attacked other fans. They have also declared total war on the writers and producers of the show they supposedly love. There was a point towards the end of Season 3 when Josh Schwartz was being bombarded by Twitter posts in which Chair fans threatened him with death if he didn’t do what they wanted him to do. The situation is exactly the same today with Safran and the GG Writers. Chair fans are still threatening them because that’s the only thing that they can do because, at the end of the day, they’re a bunch of Blair Waldorf wannabes who have nothing better to do than to stare at their computer screens and bitch and moan to the show runners about how badly their show is going.
There is something inherently wrong with a fandom that will go out of its way to persecute those that do not bend down to its own wishes. As a fanfiction writer, I’ve had to encounter their hatred first hand. When I wrote a Chair story and inserted a Chanessa interlude, I was forced by the sheer volume of negative coverage to end the story and delete. When I wrote a similar story in the Glee fandom about Puck, Quinn, and Finn, there were a couple of negative reviews, but nobody went out of their way to deliberately attack my work and tell me to my face that my writing was a waste of their time.
Obviously, the Dair fandom does not function in the same way as the Chair fans do. While there are exceptions, I haven’t noticed anybody going out of their way to create burn books or websites that advertise Dan and Blair as the perfect pair. Sure, we bitch and moan about spoilers and the fact that our ship may have problems, but we are realists and we genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
Why is that? Maybe, it’s because the relationship that we love so much is centered around something more than sexual intercourse, obsession, and possessiveness. We love Blair and Dan because we see the best versions of ourselves in them. We want them to be endgame because they are a depiction of what a relationship in real life can be.
Another thing about the Dair fandom that I like is that we are actually the ones that are pleading for peace and not the Chair fans. How many times have we logged on to the Dair tag and seen a public service announcement or an essay that begs Chair fans to stay on their own turf? Clearly, we wouldn’t be doing this if our M.O. was to attack them. We just want some peace and quiet.
Finally, the people that accuse us of being childish and pseudo-feminists should go and take a hard look in the mirror. They are the ones that attack us. They are the ones that rub it in our faces when our Twitter trending doesn’t work. They are the ones that accuse of being immature and childish. They are the ones that believe the only endgame is for Blair to be in a relationship where she is not treated as an emancipated woman who has her own rights, but as an object that is necessary because her boyfriend wants her to be there.
I know that there are some people who will attack me for what I’ve written, but I really don’t care. I support Dair and the Dair fandom and I will continue to support it because it’s the healthiest one around.
