Chuck and Blair’s symbols of POWER and transition
Season 1 - Blair used to wear a headband. It was a symbol of power, of a status. She used to be the Queen of everything at Constance with that. Chuck used to wear a scarf. It looked almost as something he couldn’t go out without. In 1.18 Blair says “Nothing that requires removing your scarf” as if Chuck didn’t let go of that object easily, even when it wasn’t the case for him to wear it, almost as Linus in Snoopy and his blanket.= EQUAL POWER (ILLUSION).
Season 2 – Blair kept wearing her headbands and rule the school, but Chuck let go of his scarf after episode 2.07, the episode was titled “Chuck in real life”, and we have a taste of how being Chuck Bass means since he’s been quite a dark and mysterious character so far. = BOTH WEAK (WEAK & COWARD) BUT ABLE TO FACE THEIR WEAKNESS AT THE END
Season 3 – In 3.02 Dan tells Blair “No headbands in college” and gets rid of the one she was wearing. Blair is not a Queen anymore at NYC, and she can’t be anymore although she believes she can. Chuck starts wearing another object in particular, a pinky ring. It is symbol of business power, and often old businessmen wear one as to indicate a status. So theoretically, Chuck is more powerful (apparently of course) than Blair this season, but not exactly wise because it’s just an illusion given by the ring he’s wearing. = BOTH ILLUSIONARY POWERFUL AT THE BEGINNING - BOTH WEAK AT THE END (WEAK & EGO/MATERIALIST)
Season 4 – In 4.01 Chuck drops his ring to take a new identity. He didn’t have another important object to substitute the pinky ring, but I saw they often put flowers on the lapel of the jacket of his suit. Have no idea if that means something, but flowers on the lapel are usually wear by grooms at weddings, or best men. Blair didn’t have a significant object either this season. = BOTH WEAK AT THE BEGINNING (WEAK & COWARD) - BOTH POWERFUL AT THE END (CONSCIOUSNESS OF THEIR ABILITIES; PATH LEADING TO FUTURE MATURATION)
Both the headband, scarf and pinky ring are described in psychology as transitional objects, comfort objects. When they wore those, both Chuck and Blair eluded themselves that they had powers. In S1/S2, Blair believed she could rule a school, I could call it the power of the headband. In S1/beginning of S2 Chuck wore a scarf more as an illusion. A comfort object usually substitutes the mother-child bond, the moment in childhood when the child needs to start separating from his/her Mother and realize that his Mom can’t satisfy his wishes, and she’s not his. The concept of ‘me’ and ‘not me’. I mean, Chuck didn’t have a Mother so the scarf used to give him comfort and when he wore it -like when Blair wore a headband- he could do anything just because of that. People who use a comfort object usually give it a name, and for example Chuck in the books gave a name to his scarf, Boris. Read more about it here.
When in S3 Dan tells Blair that headbands aren’t allowed in College he breaks that bond between Blair and High School. I could say Nate was also a comfort person in terms of this, he was someone known, that she had been with for years. In 2.24 Blair tells Serena Nate was just her high school boyfriend, while in 3.08 he talks about Chuck as a guy with whom she is in a real relationship, and Chuck is the unknown, like the unknown was the world of College she wasn’t used to. In S3 Chuck wore a pinky ring. He thought that wearing it would have given him also businessman qualities, but it doesn’t exactly work like that. Chuck looked though more prone to accept his new status as a businessman who wanted to start building his own Empire like his Father did. He thought he could earn that by make deals who were really not trustworthy, in 3.02 we see that for eg, so another reason why Chuck and Blair’s careers can be paralleled. Not to mention the IP.
In S4 Chuck decided to throw away his ring. In my opinion, he felt like he had the chance to start a new life and start from zero, since his mental proposition for his career went to fuck itself. He had been missing for the whole Summer in NYC, so also his business at the Empire wasn’t going well. Blair had started Columbia and she looked like she could kind of rule there, but it was another illusion. Chuck’s life wasn’t going well after he got mad at Blair for sending away Eva, another comforting person, illusive dream of finally found peace with his issues, they tried to destroy each other because there aren’t people or objects left to obsess with. It only led to themselves running into themselves again because in the end the only ‘comfort’ they need is in each other. Show has proven us that no matter what they do, they’ll always come back to each other because they know that it’s always going to be them at the end. It also happened with the Bass Industries storyline, Bart was Chuck’s main obsession and issue. He was fixed and bonded to him since it was his Father, so he needed something that could make him move past that ghost. He needed to know that Bart wasn’t a bad person and a heartless like he always thought. Once he freed from that ghost, he was ready to go and try to regain Blair’s trust again. But he needed to let her go now in order to understand she isn’t PHYSICALLY his like he says in 4.20 “You are mine”, she is his in his heart, but he needs to let the person go, as much as he knows he will suffer because of it. But of course, that didn’t mean the end of anything.
Because:
If you love something, you should set it free. (Chuck, 1.18) When two people are meant to be together, they’ll find their way back. (Chuck, 4.09)
