▲ Chuck and Blair + mirrors ▲
We’ve had a scene every season of Chuck and Blair looking at themselves (in the specific case of 2.03 they’re just reflected in the mirror, but they’re not watching themselves) in mirrors.
Mirrors mean various things. Look at ourselves and face honestly what we’ve done, or the future and how we shall move, and how we see ourselves - ? - years from now, or someone we identify with. And the appearance of course. Mirrors can also reflect light and like I wrote in the other parallel, Blair shines with Chuck, so.
In 1.08 Chuck had given Blair an expensive necklace. He wanted to make her day better, but he also was giving her, his heart. If you noticed, there’s a heart charm in the middle of the necklace, hehe. He also confessed his feelings for the first time, because that ‘Define like - there’s something in my stomach, fluttering’ to me was more like a ‘Yeah Blair, I fell for you but I feel too confused and ashamed of myself to admit it yet, because I’ve never felt this way before in my entire life’. He comments on how that beautiful piece of jewelery can be only perfect on someone who deserves its beauty. The gesture may look like an usual playboy behavior to soothe the girl and take her to bed, but there’s too much romanticism in his words than it seems, because he knew her better than any other guy, he knew that she was unsure of her appearance, but he truly admired her. Looking at themselves in the mirror he was meaning to tell her ‘What the hell, Blair. Have you seen your reflection? Have strength and believe in yourself. You are beautiful but you’re the only one who doesn’t see it. To me, you are perfect. You succeeded in melting my heart.’
In this case when Blair looks in the mirror and sees how the necklace is perfect on her fair skin despite the sarcastic start ‘Is that our sex tape?’ because she doesn’t take Chuck seriously, and that Chuck truly bought it because he knew she wanted it so bad to be happy. She wanted Nate to give it to her so that he showed her, he still loved her (remember in 1.07 she asks Nate if he loved her, but Nate doesn’t answer). She starts to reassure, and starts to believe. ‘Wow, there’s someone that thought about me! But it’s Chuck Bass. He’s bad, but… I am attracted by him.’ After that he takes her hand and kisses her shoulder. A gesture so sweet and intimate that I don’t believe he’s done with any other girl. This is the very first step of their relationship, Blair becoming older, and Chuck facing he has feelings for the FIRST time.
This is the first ‘maybe in the future’. Seeing each other in the mirror and realize they can. Blair can grow self esteem, and Chuck can grow actual and pure love for someone.
In 2.03 Chuck looks blocked. He wants Blair so bad it hurts but he can’t say those three little words she wants to hear from him, because as he says in 2.01, he was afraid she could have seen the real him during the Summer, and this scared the shit out of him because he was afraid to look at himself and see that he was actually changing, maturing. So to have Blair he has to think a way, and luckily for him there’s a blackout, because in the dark everyone can show its true colors shamelessly, since the darkness covers them, and the blindness makes it impossible to see even a little scar or imperfection we may have. We aren’t afraid in the darkness. But when the lights go on…
3.18 is the post IP episode. Blair looks at herself in the mirror, and she’s not truly happy because she feels weak. She let her guard down and was being played by the person she slowly started to trust. She sees that she doesn’t like what she’s became with Chuck (hence the ‘I don’t like what I’ve became with you’ line) and seeing herself there pretending to be happy when she isn’t, makes her feel bad. She felt loved and Chuck truly gave himself to her, but he wasn’t capable yet of pure and altruistic love. Then Chuck appears behind her, the reflection of them together makes her smile as he gives her a new necklace, but then she thinks again. She abruptly leaves him there saying that ‘At least they won’t be lonely in hell’, there’s where she sees her now. In the fire, with no chance of being saved. Or in a cul de sac. ‘Am I happy right now? No. I am afraid. Afraid he could do that again, that he could play my heart that way if I give myself to him so easily again. I’m not ready yet for this. I don’t know if I’ll be ready again. Not now. I can’t even look at myself.’ That’s why she can’t bear to see herself with him, right there.
And let’s talk about the last one (theoretically) of episode 4.09. We have not one, but two mirror scenes. The first, where Blair fixes Chuck’s tie and they talk about what they are - that in my opinion makes them look like a married couple - and the second, when Blair’s dress is open and Chuck’s hand lies on her belly. Okay I don’t want to talk you about my dreams, it will be too long, but shortening, I could came to the point to think that reflection #1 could mean that they could really become a married couple. They looked like one, they see themselves as one despite the fact that there both thought they were having just sex. They were both afraid the other didn’t love him/her anymore, and so they kept keeping the flame alive. Chuck wanted to marry her after all, and I’m sure if Louis wasn’t around, we know from the finale that she would have said yes. Because they so looked married there, don’t lie. In the mirror scene #2, oh boy, let me say that I would have never expected to say something like this, like I would have never expected to see Chuck last year almost proposing, but this is a hell of an amazing foreshadowing. As you may know, I am strongly convinced that Blair is the one pregnant, and that they may make her keep this baby. I want it soooo bad. As you may have read my fan fiction, you know I love CB + a baby.
To end this long ass post, let me say that the last CB + mirror parallel brings me to the season finale. Chuck and Blair not only see each other together in their future, they also see themselves together as a family, and not just the two of them. And I just love this so much.
